Bible theme table: shepherds in the field
The pictures below were sent to me by a mother, who made this theme table with her preschool aged child. She found ideas online, and drew her own templates. The pictures are posted here on the website to provide you with some ideas and inspiration to make your own meaningful Christmas Bible theme table.

Advent Calendar 2023 - Around the Manger
This is an Advent calendar for young children in the shape of a star with four points (one point for every week). For each week you also find a smaller star with seven points (one point for each day in that week). You could count down the days to Christmas on the big star (the weeks) as well as on the small stars (the days). You could do this by putting a sticker on the circles, or by colouring the circles.
There is a Bible reading schedule with questions that goes with this calendar. You can find this Bible reading schedule in the same document.
Note: the fourth week of Advent in 2023 only has a Sunday, which is why there is only one circle on the star. You could continue counting down until New Year’s Eve.
This Advent calendar is translated with permission from Bijbels Opvoeden.

Advent Calendars: Bible texts
|
Downloadable files are available for the paper chain calendar and for the cards of the canvas calendar. The files include instructions for assembling your calendar.
Both types of calendar have two different versions: * a history version with Bible texts about the history of Christmas (birth of Christ, shepherds in the field, wise men in the east, etc.); * a prophecy version with Old Testament prophecies about the coming Messiah. All Bible texts are quoted from the KJV. |

Advent calendars: A question for every day
![]()
|
This advent calendar is a puzzle. Every day, you have to look up a Bible text and answer a question. Then, the card indicates which letter of the answer you need. Write that letter on the back of the card (card calendar) or on the separate answer template (paper chain calendar). On December 25 you can read a complete sentence!
The documents provide instructions on how to make the calendar. |

Advent calendar: Names of Christ
This is another paper chain Advent calendar. On every day in December, you can take a link off and find the Bible verse mentioned on this link. What name of Christ can you read in that Bible verse?

Bible theme tables do not have to be fancy at all. The point is to make a visual for children. Especially for younger children, it is great to make a Bible theme table about a history.
This Bible theme table is about the history of the shepherds, who heard about the birth of Jesus. They went to see Him right away. After reading the Bible story with the children, you can place the children's Bible with the picture of this history on the Bible theme table. If you have some other objects (such as toy sheep), you can place them on the theme table as well. I added a card with Luke 2:11. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. |

These two colouring cards are very suitable for younger children. Print the cards on white cardstock, cut the letter-sized sheet in half to separate the two cards, and fold the cards. (Depending on your printer settings, you might need to trim off the edge on the right side after folding the card to make sure the picture is centered.)
Thanks to my young friend for colouring the cards in the picture! Note: please print only the first page of the document. The second page only contains the links with the sources of the colouring pictures, which I am required to cite. |
These colouring cards are more suitable for older children, since the pictures are smaller. Download the pictures, and print them on white cardstock. Colour them, cut them out, and glue them onto coloured cardstock. You can print the document with the Bible texts as well, and glue a Bible text underneath the picture.

Craft: a rod out of the stem of Jesse
This craft is made by Bijbelknutsels (instagram: @bijbelse_knutsels) and is posted with their permission. Bijbelknutsels requested not to change anything about the photos, which is why the photos of the craft contain a Dutch Bible text.
Isaiah 11:1
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
Cut three (same sized) circles out of cardboard.
Tape the three circles on top of each other with tape, and put some paper in between to make it thicker (see picture).
Wrap the circle in brown packing paper.
Draw rings on your "tree trunk".
Roll a piece of brown paper and tear the bottom part, so you can easily glue your "branch" onto the "tree trunk".
Cut little green leaves, and tape or glue them onto the "branch".

Game: Who/what/where am I?
Download and print the cards on cardstock. Optional: Laminate for durability.
Game instructions: Put all the cards on a stack in the middle. Taking turns, each participant takes a card from the stack, and reads the first clue to the person on his/her left side. If the person on the left knows the answer, he/she gets three points. If the person does not know the answer, read the second clue on the card. If the person knows the answer after the second clue, he/she gets two points. If the person does not know the answer, read the third clue. If the person knows the answer after reading the third clue, he/she gets one point. If the person still does not know the answer, the next person may answer the question, and get a point if the answer is correct. If the answer is not correct, the card goes on the bottom of the stack again. ![]()

Window posters
You can print these window designs (adjust the size if you would like bigger or smaller posters). Tape the poster on the outside of the window. Using window markers, trace the letters and decorations.
If you want to make the words readable from outside, you can use the "mirror image" posters! You will trace the poster backwards, so the words are the right way when you look at them from the outside. Thanks to Deanna from @auroraprints_ for designing these beautiful posters! |
