Bible reading schedule
This schedule has a portion of Scripture to read for every day of the week of Thanksgiving. The schedule starts on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and ends on the Monday of Thanksgiving.
This Bible reading schedule is great to use with families, for example, for the Bible reading after supper. Some of the questions are easier, while others are more difficult, in order to make this a useful activity for the whole family. Check the Bible Reading Schedules page on this website for Bible reading schedules around other Christian events. ![]()

One of our followers submitted this craft for Psalm 100:4. She made a crossword puzzle, a word scramble, and a Bingo game to go with it. The craft has some differentiation: for older children, you can use all the people and make the full text. For younger children, you can use half the people and make only the first part of the text.

Thanksgiving chain: templates and instructions | |
File Size: | 259 kb |

One of our followers developed and made this Thanksgiving chain. This is a wonderful activity if you want to go deeper than the regular "What are you thankful for this season?" activities. For four weeks, there is a Bible verse for each day, along with a few questions about this Bible verse as well as some application questions. This is a good resource to use with the whole family, including older children.
How do we give thanks?
When Hannah received her son Samuel, she gave him to the Lord. When Noah came out of the ark, he sacrificed unto the Lord. When the Israelites were safely led through the Red Sea, they sang unto the Lord. Brainstorm with your family, and try to think of more examples in the Bible of how people gave thanks unto the Lord.
Around Thanksgiving, many people list the things they are (or ought to be) thankful for. After listing all these things, think with your children about how you/they can give thanks to the Lord for all the received blessings.
Ideas:
- Take the list of things to be thankful for. Pray with the whole family, and thank the Lord for each specific item on the list.
- In order to show thankfulness for all the food we received, you can decide to donate some money (or food items) to the food bank or an organization which does food relief projects in third world countries.
- Each family member donates some of their own money for the collection in church on Thanksgiving Day.
- Write a song together to praise God for all the things He has given.
In addition to this, you can also take time to thank some people for things they have done. Children can make a card, bake cookies, or host a dinner to thank people who have done something for them.

What are we thankful for? Different categories
On Thanksgiving Day, it is a classic and meaningful activity to list or write down things to be thankful for. If you want to change it up a bit, you can come up with a few different categories. Examples: religious/spiritual, work/school, family. Write these categories on a sheet of paper, or make cups for each category. Everyone can add things to be thankful for to each category. See example below:
Religious/spiritual
- We are allowed to go to church in freedom - We all have our own Bible to read - God, from eternity, opened a way of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ |
Work/school
- We received strength to do our work every day - I passed my math test, which I was so nervous about - I have friends to play at school |
Family
- We received a healthy baby cousin - Grandpa, who broke his leg, is able to walk again |
Thanksgiving tree: Bible verses about giving thanks

Bible Study Series: People Who Gave Thanks
"People Who Gave Thanks" is a series with devotional activities for children between 8 and 12 years old. The children can work through the activities with an adult. The series has four chapters.
Each chapter is three pages long, and includes: * A portion of Scripture to read * An explanation of (parts of) the Scripture portion * A few deep thinking questions * A themed puzzle or a review activity * A song. The tunes of the songs will generally be well known. The song is written specifically for each chapter. For Bible study series around other topics, please visit the Bible Study Series page. ![]()

Thanksgiving jar
Find a jar (any canning jar will do). In the week leading up to Thanksgiving, let everyone in the family add one note to the jar every day with something he/she is thankful for. On Thanksgiving day, you can empty out the jar and read all the notes with each other. It is good to think with each other about the many reasons we have to be thankful!
This activity can also be done around New Year's Eve. In the week leading up to New Year's Eve, let everyone in the family add one note to the jar every day with a blessing received that year. On New Year's Eve, you can empty out the jar and read all the notes with each other. Count your blessings! |
Thanksgiving scategories
You can play several variations of this game.
Variation 1 - Write down all the letters of the alphabet. For every letter, write down something to be thankful for.
Variation 2 - Write down the word Thanksgiving. For every letter of this word, write down something to be thankful for.
Variation 3 - Choose a letter of the alphabet, and think of as many things as possible to be thankful for starting with that letter.
Check the Christianity Cove website for another variety of Thanksgiving Scategories!

Thanksgiving poster
Find a poster board to make a family poster about Thanksgiving. Write the word Thanksgiving either on top or in the middle. Throughout the week, adults and children alike can find things to add to the poster. Think of:
* Write down your reasons to be thankful.
* Copy some Bible verses about giving thanks.
* Photocopy and add Psalters, Psalms, or hymns about giving thanks.
* Add pictures of things you are thankful for.
* Mention Bible histories in which people gave thanks, or add pictures of it.
* Brainstorm how we can/should show thankfulness to God.
You can set goals for each family member. For example: everyone should add at least two reasons two be thankful. Or: older children should add at least two Bible verses and/or one Psalter about giving thanks.
On Thanksgiving Day, discuss what everyone added to the poster.

Sing Psalms
James 5:13
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
Clearly, singing Psalms is a way of expressing thankfulness towards God! Read and discuss this verse together, and take the time to sing Psalms (or Psalters or hymns) together. Try to find Psalms, Psalters, or hymns that have a connection to Thanksgiving.

The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims, who came with the Mayflower from England to America, in order to be free from their religion.
